Effectively Managing Psoriasis Flare ups

Any doctor will tell you that the key to managing your psoriasis flare-ups is identifying your triggers. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that occurs in a vicious cycle. However, every psoriasis sufferer is different as far as the severity of their flare ups and their common triggers. Although common psoriasis culprits do exist, it doesn’t mean your psoriasis is necessarily due to these triggers:

  • Alcohol
  • Skin damage (i.e., cuts abrasions)
  • Weather (i.e., cold or dry)
  • Lowered immunity
  • Infections
  • Smoking
  • Sun exposure
  • Medications
  • Food allergies

First, learn to identify the prime sources of your psoriasis flare ups, and then try to avoid them a much as possible:

1. Keep your skin healthy and hydrated

A healthy skin regime is your best ally in preventing painful psoriasis flare ups. For instance, many individuals are prone to flare ups when their skin is dehydrated, which causes dryness, flaking, and thick, itchy skin, leaving the surface prone to cuts, abrasions, and psoriasis flare-ups. So work with your doctor or dermatologist to find a gentle moisturizer for your sensitive skin. Look for dermatologically-approved products that don’t contain any fragrances or harsh chemicals. Also, be gentle on skin, particularly in the winter when psoriasis can be worse. Opt for showers and baths in lukewarm water, as too hot water can dry out the skin. Also, use a chemical and fragrance free shampoos for sensitive skin.

2. Eat a healthy diet

If your psoriasis tends to flare up after a night of drinking or eating greasy foods, it’s best to avoid these triggers altogether. Many psoriasis sufferers report sensitivities to alcohol and red meat. If you’re unsure of your food sensitivities, start a food diary to track your daily meals and any psoriasis symptoms that crop up.

3. Get physical

Yes, daily exercise can improve your energy, sleep, and mood while helping to maintain a healthy body weight. Low impact exercise also boosts overall health by lowering stress. Remember, psoriasis often decreases with weight loss.

4. Medication conflicts?

Research shows that if you have an existing health condition, you’re prone to developing psoriasis. Plus, certain medications (i.e., NSAIDs and beta-blockers) are linked to causing psoriasis flare ups.

5. Cut stress

Emotional stress is a very common psoriasis trigger. When is stress is high, patients often notice an increase in psoriasis symptoms. So do your best to manage stress in a healthy manner by unwinding on a regular basis with relaxing hobbies (i.e., walks, massages, meditation) to maintain a healthy sleep schedule.
