How Does CoolSculpting Differ from Dieting for Weight Loss?

Harvard University scientists, Dr. Anderson and Dr. Manstein, got the idea for CoolSculpting when they noticed the dimpling effect in the cheeks of children enjoying popsicles. Further research led the researchers to observe the gradual death of fat cells when exposed to cold temperatures. They used this freezing theory to target and eliminate stubborn fat cell pockets via a procedure they dubbed CoolSculpting. Today, CoolSculpting remains the only fat-freezing, non-surgical procedure approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), since the year 2010.

CoolSculpting targets exercise- and diet-resistant fat cells with a controlled cooling (or freezing) technology, known as cryolipolysis, without any damage to targeted and surrounding skin. It’s a non-invasive body contouring procedure, which means it doesn’t require any incisions, anesthesia, or needles to preform. Here’s how CoolSculpting may rival diet and exercise as an effective way to eliminate stubborn, unwanted fat cells:

1. How does CoolSculpting destroy fat cells?
The short answer is apoptosis, which is the destruction and gradual death of fat cells achieved with a CoolSculpting procedure. Again, the procedure is non-invasive in nature. Instead, a CoolSculpting technician uses an applicator to apply freezing temperatures to targeted areas of fat cells (typically the tummy, bottocks, and thighs). Apoptosis destroys and causes the fat cells to gradually collapse and die, then the body naturally eliminates them via bodily waste.

2. Natural fat elimination
Like diet and exercise, Coolsculpting helps achieve natural fat removal. In fact, fat cells will continue to gradually die and be eliminated for a duration of up to 3 weeks following your procedure. However, unlike liposuction, most patients are able to resume regular activities directly after a procedure (which is typically 30 to 60 minutes in length).

3. Fat eliminated for good
CoolSculpting offers promises of forever fat removal, meaning that it differs from old fashioned diet and exercise, which only shrinks fat cells in size, leaving opportunity for them to grow in size. With CoolSculpting the targeted fat cells are gone for good.

4. Price and duration
While CoolSculpting may seem like a quick way to eliminate stubborn fat cells for good. It does have drawbacks as far as price compared to diet and exercise. Sure the average CoolSculpting procedure lasts 60-minutes in length, which is the length of the average workout. However, a 1 hour session costs about $750 and many patients require several sessions on an area (i.e., belly or thighs) to achieve desired contouring and permanent fat loss.
