Natural Treatments for Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental health illness. It is life-long marked by manic episodes in which there are extreme highs and extreme lows. There are four types of the disorder which all include mood swings and varying activity levels. There are also many misconceptions about Bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is actually not that rare and people may be surprised to know how many people they deal with every day have been diagnosed with it. 

There is no cure for bipolar disorder, yet it can be managed with doctor-prescribed medication and therapy. Some patients also choose to add natural supplements and behavioral practices to help alleviate many of the effects that come with the disease, such as:

1. Lifestyle changes

One of the most vital things people with Bipolar can do is make sure they get their proper rest. At least seven hours of sleep are recommended each night. This needs to be done consistently and on a regular basis. Establishing a nightly routine and making sure your sleeping environment is calm, dark and a moderate comfortable temperature. Regular exercise can help to decrease the depression that accompanies the disorder. A healthy diet with adequate amounts of fruits, vegetables, carbs, and fats also plays a part.

2. Omega-3 fatty acids

A bipolar diet incorporating Omega-3, which are fatty acids in polyunsaturated fats will help alleviate some of the symptoms of Bipolar. There are three important fatty acids in Omega-3s which are EPA, DHA, and ALA. These fats are linked to the brain chemical imbalance which causes the condition. Either supplements can be taken or Omega-3 can be found in fish such as salmon, sardines, or mackerel. They can also be found in flax seeds and walnuts. Most people, in general, are not getting enough of the essential fats in their regular diet. The anti-inflammatory properties in Omega-3 helps with stabilizing moods and decreasing irritability among other things. If you choose supplements then fish oil or krill oils are options. It is recommended to take up to 2,000 milligrams a day. There are also in vegan form if you prefer those. 

3. Magnesium

Adding magnesium to your daily regimen can help stabilize moods and decrease the severity of the manic cycles. It does so by blocking brain receptors which create symptoms of Bipolar. Large consumption of fast food can affect magnesium levels as can stress. Supplements can increase the levels enough to provide some relief. If you choose not to take supplements, you can include magnesium sources in your diet. Nuts and seeds such as almonds and sunflower seeds are high in magnesium.
