Home Solutions for Dry Eyes

Chronic dry eyes are a common condition among people who spend a great deal of time in air-conditioned rooms or staring at computer screens for extended periods. Additionally, wind, allergies, and even exposure to campfire smoke can cause symptoms to develop. In short, dry eyes are just the thing to sap some of the fun out of otherwise beautiful summer days. Typical symptoms include redness, burning sensations, blurred vision, eye fatigue, and difficulty driving at night.

Common treatments generally include but are not limited to, eye drops, and rest periods away from screens. There are also natural treatments like warm compresses, hemp seed oil, and diets that include healthy levels of omega-3’s. Eye drops and rest are the standards as far as medical recommendations go, but natural remedies like those mentioned above are very beneficial as well:

1. Hemp seed oil

This oil is high in GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) which has been demonstrated to aid in tear production and alleviate symptoms of dry eyes. Hemp seed is also a source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

2. Omega-3’s

Research shows that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may help reduce the risk or the incidence of dry eyes. Sources include oily fish, canola oil, walnuts, flax oil, ground flax-seed, olive oil, pumpkin seeds, and soybeans.

3. Warm compresses

Applying a warm compress for a few minutes and then washing the eyelids gently with soft damp cotton wool or baby shampoo can also offer relief.

4. Rest those eyes

Resting your eyes, particularly for those of us who subject themselves to long intervals of screen time is one of the best ways to quell some of the symptoms of dry eyes.

5. Humidity

Using a humidifier in the winter or in hot dry climates works to prevent dry eyes. A light spray of water applied to curtains in direct sunlight can also add moisture to the air.

6. Smoke

Cigarettes and other forms of smoke can be detrimental to more than just respiratory health. Smoke negatively impacts your eyes as well. Avoid smoky environments like cigar bars or bonfires if chronic dry eyes are a common problem for you.

Dry eyes are unfortunately something most everyone will experience at some point, but hopefully understanding the causes and the treatments outlined here will help prevent dry eyes from becoming too much of an impediment in your life. As with most forms of treatment, you should always speak with your doctor before deciding what sort of approach you should take to relieve your symptoms.
